Rubyfish

Rubyfish was a band formed by Patria and Russell Chaput. Rubyfish was in and on the o.g. Silver Lake scene performing in clubs like Spaceland, Al’ Bar and NoHo’s Eagles.

The band released indie recordings, the first being the ep “Rubyfish” and a well received 7″-single “Mr. Toad”. The band flourished in LA from 1989 to 1995, and performed most recently in 2003. Rubyfish raged on bills with such locals as Pop Defect, Possum Dixon, Ringling Sisters, Stew, Negro Problem, Lutefisk, Dos/Mike Watt, Penelope Houston, Ten Cent, Mz. 45, Abe Lincoln Story, Ferdinand, PG-13, Velouria, WACO, Touchcandy, Extra Fancy, The Andersons, Michael Whitmore Sometet, Big Elf, Clay Idols, Steven Schayer, Grant Lee Buffalo, and Ethan James among many others.

Rubyfish personnel continue to pursue creative projects: Derrick Anderson – recorded and performed with his own group The Andersons and is currently the touring bassist with The Bangles; extensively toured with Dave Davies (The Kinks) and The Smithereens. Russell Chaput – Russ is currently a member of the LA band the Skylarks, and he plays with Hookah, a sonic-volume driven band that performs in the desert; he collects and digs vintage gear including an ARP and a sweet Gretsch hollow body 6-string; and he holds the distinction of winning KROQ’s Battle of the Bands contest in the early 80’s with his then band Shadow’s End. Andy Sykora – a respected rock drummer who currently pursues experimental electronic and sound installation; works with free improvisation masters Marc Levinthal, Rick Potts, Albert Ortega, Jim McCalley; previously drummed and toured with Stew, April March and Weba Garretson, and more.
